PE and Sport Premium Funding

What is the Primary PE and Sports Premium?

The PE and Sport Premium is designed to help primary schools improve the quality of the PE and sport activities they offer their pupils. The funding is ring-fenced and therefore can only be spent on provision of PE and sport in schools.

The four objectives of the Primary PE and Sport Premium funding are:

  • To improve the quality of existing PE teaching through continuing professional learning in PE, so that all primary pupils improve their health, skills and physical literacy, and have broader exposure to a range of sports

  • To increase participation levels in competitive sport and healthy activity of pupils, and maintain these into adolescence

  • To increase the quality of initial teacher training in PE and sport and to promote PE specialisation in primary level workforce

  • Schools understand and value the benefits of high quality PE and sport, including its use as a tool for whole school improvement.

How we spent the funding in 2017-18 and the impact:

How we spent the funding in 2016-17 and the impact:

At Gurnard Primary School, we recognise the contribution of PE and sport to the health and well-being of our pupils. We believe that an innovative, varied PE curriculum and extra-curricular opportunities have a positive influence on the concentration, attitude and academic achievement of all our children.

All schools are required to publish details of how they spend PE and Sports Premium Funding and the effect it has had on pupils’ PE and sport participation and attainment.  In 2016-17 Gurnard Primary School received £9,477 in PE and Sports Premium Funding.  Our PE and Sport Funding has enabled us to continue to extend our provision through employing additional sports coaches, entering into more competitive sports events and training our teaching staff to deliver high quality PE sessions.

How we will spend the funding in 2017-18 and intended impact:

Funding of £19,160 has been allocated for the academic year 2017-18.  Our focus in allocating our PE and Sport Premium Funding for 2017-18 is to ensure that it is used to enhance, rather than maintain, our existing provision and to ensure that improvements are sustainable in the long term:

  • Employing specialist qualified sports coaches

Gurnard Primary School employs a PE teacher, sports coach, gymnastics coach and a dance teacher to provide high quality PE coaching. Our sports coaches will continue to contribute to the professional development of our teaching staff and co-ordinating events for other local schools.

  • Facilitating after school sports clubs

Gurnard Primary School offers a wide range of after school clubs, accessed by children from Early Years and Key Stages 1 and 2. These clubs include the traditional sports like football, basketball, gymnastics and netball, but we have also expanded to activities such as streetdance, running, trampolining, ballet and Tae Kwon-Do to encourage a wider group of pupils to participate.  In 2017-18 we will continue to introduce new sports through our after school clubs programme and develop links with local sports organisations to encourage pupils to participate at club level.

  • Increasing participation in competition and school sport

Our goal continues to be to provide a greater number of pupils with opportunities to be involved in a wider range of school sports. This year we aim to be involved in the following sports within intra-school, inter-school and Island-wide competitions: Football, Netball, Tag Rugby, Table Tennis, Sportshall Athletics, Handball, Gymnastics, Multi-Skills, Basketball, Hockey, Sitting Volleyball, Cross Country, Golf, Tennis, Cricket, Athletics, the Primary Island Games and the Hampshire Games.  We will be launching The Golden Mile project to encourage all pupils to participate in daily exercise and funding places for the Cluster Gifted and Talented Sports Programme.

  • Purchasing specialist equipment

This year we will be investing in specialist equipment for gymnastics.
